Description:

SS HONOR GOBLET PRESENTED TO SS-HAUPTSTURMFUHRER GERHARD PLEISS
A very large, superbly crafted Leibstandarte SS honor goblet with case, presented by Sepp Dietrich and the L.A.H. to an SS Haupsturmfuhrer who was awarded the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross in 1941. This oversized goblet stands 13 5/8" tall and opens to 6 1/2" at the top. The front of the piece is expertly engraved: "In United Loyalty SS Haupsturmfuhrer Gerhard Pleiss" above SS runes which lie within a circular cross-hatched field encircled by oak leaf wreaths. Beneath appears the name of the presenter of this fine gift: "Sepp Dietrich Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler". On the reverse of the chalice is an equally well accomplished engraved national eagle atop an oak leaf wreath which bears within a mobile swastika. Although tarnished the goblet bears no apparent dents, dings or scratches. A small flower-like maker's hallmark appears at the rear bottom of the goblet, the mark unknown to us. The chalice is offered with its original red satin lined fitted case trimmed in black and silver SS piping. The wood case bears a red paper covering, worn in places, and one of the hinges is broken. Two swastikas or runes on its cover are covered with red disks, likely by a German dealer per national law. GERHARD PLEISS (1915-1941) was an SS-Haupsturmfuhrer in the 1st SS Div. Leibstandarte "Adolf Hitler". He was awarded an Iron Cross 1st Class during the Battle of France and his Knights Cross in the Balkans while commanding 1st Companie LSSAH. Despite being wounded, Pleiss captured the key Greek position of Klidi allowing the division to pass through the mountains and into Greece and taking numerous British prisoners en route. In the attack on Rostov, Pleiss stepped upon a mine and was klilled. This is a fantastic one-of-a-kind piece, the pride of any SS collection.
