Description:

SS GUARD JOHANN REESE REPORT
(? - 1946) Notorious guard at the Neuengamme concentration camp, tried and executed after the war for crimes against humanity. A contemporary typed transcript of a testimony given by a witness and apparently used by the prosecution at the Neuengamme Camp Case No. 1 war crimes trial, 2pp. legal folio, [n.p., n.d.] detailing some of Reese's awful actions. In part: '...Reese was, at first, in charge of the punishment company...prisoners had to endure terrible sufferings...prisoners...were beaten with rubber tubes, got kicks, and on the very spot received 25 strokes with a cane on the back and buttocks. His specialty was to kick prisoners in the belly, in the testicles, and if they were lying on the ground even in the face...threw prisoners in water ditches, and pushed them back in again when they struggled...Death occurred mostly within a week, and on many occasions at the work site itself...He was commonly designated as the terror and the evil spirit of the camp, and named 'shit' in the same breath as Thumann and Dreimann. When Reese walked through the camp and the huts, he carried a length of wire cable in his boot...of which he made lively and indiscriminate use, in cases of failure to salute, lack of attention...or because of a mission button or similar trivialities...it should be noted also that he took part in hangings not only on the days he was on duty, but on all other days as well...' Much more. Moderately worn with pin holes at the top left, text slightly faded, scattered stains.
