Description:

SS GUARD ANTON THUMANN REPORT
(1912-1946) 'The Killer of Neuengamme,' SS guard at multiple concentration camps who was arrested, charged, and executed after the war for crimes against humanity. A contemporary typed transcript of testimony given by a witness and apparently used by the prosecution at the Neuengamme Camp Case No. 1 war crimes trial, 2pp. legal folio, [n.p., n.d.] detailing some of Thumann's heinous actions. In part: '...he strutted around the camp handing out brutal beatings wherever he went. It was all the same treatment for every triviality; whoever was the man concerned there was a rain of boxes on the ears. It was particularly bad for the senior men in the blocks...Thumann found some fault every day...10-25 blows with a stick. This was meant to be a spur to the block seniors to thrash their prisoners in some way. One day all the Jehovah's Witness in Neuengamme were ordered to attend at the bath house. All 1500 of them had to strip naked outside and march in single file...each one as he came out received a blow...on the head or back. If he could stand it, he was fit to work...many of the prisoners collapsed...got boxes on the ears...and was also bitten by Thumann's dog...When he arrived a whisper went through the whole camp...There could seldom exist a more sadistic and low grade character...'. Much more. Moderately worn with pin holes at the top left, text slightly faded, some trimming of the margins.
