Description:

SS 'FLORIAN GEYER' MEMBER 'UBERWACHUNGSKARTE'
A fine 'Überwachungskarte' ('file card') of an SS soldier named Herbert Strehl detailing his personal information and service history. File holes at the left margin, and slightly worn. Strehl served in the 9th SS Standarte, and most notably the 8th SS Cavalry Division also called 'Florian Geyer.' The Florian Geyer division was notorious as being responsible for tens of thousands of civilian deaths during 'pacification' operations in the Soviet Union. The division was trapped in the Siege of Budapest with the IX SS Mountain Corps when the Soviet and Romanian forces surrounded the city in December 1944. The division was destroyed in the fighting for Budapest, and by the end of the siege, of the 30,000 men of the SS Corps, only about 800 reached the German lines.
