Description:

SS DAGGER WITH PRESENTATION ENGRAVING
A fine example of a 1940 SS dagger, 8 3/4" blade, 13 3/4" overall, completely original with matching scabbard. The ebony grip shows only use consistent with age, with proper eagle emblem and SS runes that are undamaged and perfectly inset into the grips. The grips themselves are very closely fitted fitted with the crossguard and pommel, as expected. The reverse of the crossguard bears an incised initial "I", and shows only one spot of soiling, with the pommel completely clean. The black finished scabbard is perfectly straight with a few minute dings clustered near the drag and the throat, and its finish remains very good with no significant scratches to paint and fittings. The scabbard fittings and their screws are all original, the drag bright and undamaged. The reverse of the blade bear''s the "pyramid" mark of Solingen maker Gottlieb Hammesfahr. The obverse of the blade bear the engraved motto "Meine Ehre heisst Treue" ("Loyalty is my Honor"), while the reverse is further engraved with the presentation "In treuer Kameradschaft ("In True Comeradeship") Sturm 4/I/1", indicating that the recipient of this dagger belonged to that company of the Allgemeine-SS. This company was subordinate to the "1st SS-Standarte ("regiment") Munich", and held the "4/I/1" designation only from December 1931 through April 1934. The blade is quite clean and bright, showing no corrosion, with a few light run marks. The engravings still retain almost all of the original shadowing. A superb example, with a seldom-seen personal embellishment.
