Description:

SS CAVALRY OFFICER'S PHOTO ALBUM SHOWS ABUSE AND THIEVERY FROM WARSAW JEWS
Superb content SS cavalry officer's photograph album, 12.5 x 10 in. cloth-covered covers with brown leather strap containing 145 photographs of various sizes documenting the theft of property from persecuted Jews in Warsaw and their abuse at the hands of SS Cavalrymen, as well as multiple images of the horsemen in maneuvers, in the field, at rest, etc. The SS Totenkopf Horse Regiment, which was raised in September 1939, was used for police and security duties in Poland, under the command of Hermann Fegelein. It participated widely in looting and in the execution of Jewish and other prisoners in Poland. The album opens with images of destroyed Polish defense works, bridges, and vehicles. It then segues into scenes of hay being trucked to a warehouse which would be used to house the unit's horses. Property in the warehouse is thrown into an adjacent field. It includes armoires, dressers, chairs, tables, suitcases, beds, etc. whose contents are shown to be picked-over by German officers and local labor before the remains are burned. Following photographs show the men armed and mounted, apparently during operations. Three photos show Jews in the vicinity of Madalinskiego Street in Warsaw, a Jewish district. Crowds of people are shown, one including a German soldier with a whip apparently addressing the frightened Jews before him, one of who wears an armband. The balance of the album shows the horsemen in fast-moving operations in the countryside, in steeplechase competitions, hauling forage, etc. Sold with a copy of 'Deutsche Reiterheste' magazine, Berlin, 1938, some content concerning the SS horsemen.
