Description:

Third Reich sailor's cap tally in black rayon, 17 1/4" x 1 1/4" (folded), embroidered with the ship's name "Turbinen-Schnelldampfer [fast steam turbine ship] 'Bremen'" in gold thread, between the embroidered flags of the NSDAP and the Norddeutscher Lloyd shipping line. The tally shows some adhesive residue at several points on the reverse, else fine. Also present are several articles of ephemera related to the BREMEN, includes: pair of third-class breakfast menus, each 4pp. 8vo., dated July 19 and July 22, 1936, and each illustrated with an image of the ship and her name, with the illustration on the earlier example attributed to noted maritime artist Willy Storer. Both show light foxing and light abrasions to the verso, else very good. WITH: souvenir leather-bound notepad, 2 1/4" x 4", bearing the gilt name of the ship and the shipping line, and the flag of the line on the cover. A miniature pencil is secured by a leather loop, with the first ten or so pages bearing pencil notations in English. Shows appreciable wear to the covers, else very good. Four pieces. The BREMEN was constructed in 1928 and captured the coveted Blue Riband on her first two transatlantic crossings. She was used as a barracks ship at the start of the war but was destroyed by arson in 1941. Her metal was salvaged for reuse as military material.
