Description:

Model 1880 hunting knife produced for the U.S. Army by the Springfield Armory, 8 1/4" blade, 13" overall, showing extensive modifications accomplished during its long career. The broad spear-shaped blade, originally single-edged, as had a second edge ground out of the spine, and shows extensive sharpening overall, with freckling and shallow pitting throughout. The blade is attached to a tubular steel socket with integral quillions, and is marked "US" over "Springfield" on one side, with the serial number "929" on the other, and showing some oxidation. This socket is in turn attached to the original knurled wood handles, which has been completely wrapped in leather laces, and has had an aluminum cap fitted over the pommel, all showing extensive wear. The blade is housed in its original black leather scabbard, featuring a brass guard at the throat and the hanging loop cut into a fringe. The reverse of the scabbard bears the incised name "Jonny Morgan" and the locations "Somoa" [sic], "Tonga", "Friendly Islands" and "Pago Pago". The stitching of the scabbard shows some separation at the tip, with verdigris and patina to the brass fittings and extensive wear overall. Estimated accordingly.
