Description:

SPIRO AGNEW
(1918 - 1996) Vice President of the United States under Richard Nixon, forced to resign in disgrace following a kick-back scandal. Superb content T.L.S., 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], November 21, 1973, to a supporter named Mrs. Spencer. In full: '...Your support and encouragement meant a great deal to me. I can only reaffirm my innocence to you and hope, in this complex and confusing situation, that you will try to understand that I believe the actions I have taken are in the best interest of the Nation...' Accompanied by a printed franked envelope. Small stain to the left margin not affecting text, else fine. In early 1972 the U.S. Attorney from Maryland, George Beall, opened a corruption investigation involving contractors and public officials in Baltimore County. Initially Agnew was not under suspicion as he had not been a county official since 1966, and any crimes potentially committed could not be prosecuted because of the statutes of limitations. However, investigators began to discover evidence and witnesses attesting to the fact that Agnew accepted kickbacks from a contracting company after his influence as governor gave it business. Subsequent revelations found that some payments continued through his time as Vice President, and thus could be prosecuted. After it was announced that Agnew was under investigation, he vehemently denied any wrongdoing on his part, but as time went on more evidence was found and he would eventually plead no contest to a felony charge of tax evasion. On October 10, 1973, Agnew submitted a letter to President Nixon announcing his resignation, and House Minority Leader Gerald Ford would eventually become his successor.
