Description:

SPIKE FROM HULL OF CSS NASHVILLE
A relic from the CSS NASHVILLE, a four-sided iron spike with squared head, 8 in. long, likely recovered from the vessel's wreck. An old descriptive take remains attached. The NASHVILLE was a brig-rigged, side-paddle-wheel passenger steamer. During the Battle of Fort Sumter, the USMS Nashville sailed into Charleston without flying the American flag and was fired upon by the USRC HARRIET LANE which marked the first shot of the naval war in the Civil War. NASHVILLE raised the American flag, and after the surrender of Sumter, she docked at Charleston. She was taken by the Confederates and fitted out as a cruiser. She captured two prizes worth US$66,000, and was commissioned the privateer RATTLESNAKE. After she ran aground on the Ogeechee River, the monitor USS MONTAUK destroyed her with shell fire on Feb. 28, 1863.
