Description:

"SPICE BOX" FROM HITLER'S CHANCELLERY...MADE BY SLAVE LABORERS AT DACHAU
Important and evocative camp relic, a pine box which once contained spices grown by slave laborers at Dachau, thence sold to Germans for use in their homes. This example appears to have originated from the kitchens of Adolf Hitler himself. The 17" wide x 7" deep x 5" tall pine box bears two painted labels on the top lid: "The Herb Garden DACHAU" and "German Spices". Within is a paper label showing three caricatures of Middle Eastern men hauling sacks of spices with the notice: "To refill these spice jars, contact the German Research Institute for Nutrition and Food Provision Ltd. Factory, Dachau...". The factory was founded by the notorious Oswald Pohl who, like Himmler, was an adherent of a "natural" lifestyle. The plantation at Dachau and the smaller one at Ravensbruck concentration camp were distinctive in the sense that they were cultivated almost exclusively by prisoners, the profits from their work plowed back into research and the coffers of the SS. Prisoners suffered greatly in clearing and draining land and in the grueling work in the fields. The spice box is sold with a retained carbon receipt from the SS gardens at Dachau for ten 500 gr. packets of pepper, ordered by the "Hausintendantur des Fuhrers" at "Berlin...Wilhelmstrasse 77" on Mart. 13, 1942. This order would have been shipped to the office in charge of procuring food for Hitler and the mess at the chancellery. A shocking, thought-provoking relic.
