Spanish Treasure A Spanish milled silver piece of eight recovered from the renowned wreck of the treasure ship Nuestra Senora de Atochawhich sank in a storm in the Gulf of Mexico in the late 1600s. The Atocha was the lead vessel in a fleet of ships carrying coins and gemslooted by the Spanish during their conquest of Mexico and South America. This coin was minted in Potosi, Bolivia and bears and emblemof a cross on the recto, and an intricate design on verso, measuring about 1.5in in diameter. The coin has been freed of encrustation and carefully cleaned. Recovered by world-famous treasure hunter Mel Fisher.
