Good pair of items signed by the two U.S. Navy admirals responsible for bringing about the victory over the Spanish fleet at Santiago de Cuba, includes: Rear Admiral WINFIELD SCOTT SCHLEY (1839-1911), who commanded the Flying Squadron during the battle from his flagship, the armored cruiser USS BROOKLYN. A.L.S. ‘W. S. Schley', 1p. 8vo., Washington, D.C., Nov. 12, 1899, to T. F. Kelly, promising to visit and inspect some work his correspondent has performed. He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows a horizontal fold across the center and slight toning, otherwise fine. WITH: Read Admiral WILLIAM T. SAMPSON (1840-1902), who was in overall command of the U.S. fleet in Cuba and laid the strategic and tactical framework for the victory, but was ashore conferring with Army officers during the battle itself. Bold signature ‘W. T. Sampson' in black ink on a 4.5 x 2.75 in. card, adding ‘U. S. N.' The card has been mounted to an 8vo. leaf, else in fine condition.
