Description:

SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR CAVALRY COMPANY ROSTER WITH PHOTOGRAPH
Printed poster on a linen backing, 21 1/2" x 27 1/2", a roster intended to list the names of a company participating in the Spanish-American War. The roster bears spaces for the regiment and company titles, as well as for the officers and men in its ranks, all unfortunately left blank in this instance. However, the poster bears a 12 1/4" x 9" albumen photograph at center, depicting the sixty members of the company. Each soldier holds a Krag-Jorgenson carbine, indicating that they are cavalrymen, but for their commander, who sprawls on the ground in front of his men. Their company flag appears at the back of the ranks at center, showing that they are company "I"; however, their regimental number appears to have been altered in the plate, and may be either "5" or "6". The 5th Cavalry, as part of the Independent Regular Brigade, bore the brunt of combat of Puerto Rico during the conflict. The 6th Cavalry, however, played an even more historically notable role, attacking the left flank of San Juan Hill in Cuba during the battle for that crucial Spanish position on July 1, 1898. The top of the roster features a full-color eagle with crossed American flags over a shield bearing the title "The American-Spanish War 1898", while a monochrome portrait of President William McKinley appears at bottom, flanked by scrolls bearing the legends: "War For Humanity's Sake", "Remember the Maine" and "Cuba Libre". The bottom edge bears the copyright line: "Copyrighted by Chickamauga Photograph Co. 1898", indicating that it was produced during or very shortly after the end of the conflict. The roster shows chips to the edges and several large internal tears, all held together by the contemporary linen backing, good to very good overall. Also present is the original mailing tube for the roster, addressed to a Mrs. John W. Lowe in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania.
