Description:

SOVIET TEACHING AID SHOWS CONFEDERATE RELIANCE ON SLAVERY
A very rare and highly unusual Russian teaching aid covering the American Civil War, ca. 1970, highlighting differences between the Union and Confederacy and designed to instill anti-American sentiment in Soviet schoolchildren during the height of the Cold War. The map clearly emphasizes the high number of slaves and comparably low population of the Southern states, stating of the North: 'Population of Northern States was 22 million people...Army of the North during the war 2,750 thousand people...Industrial Workers - 1,300 thousand people'. It compares this with the Confederate population of '9 million people, out of which 3.5 million were Negro slaves...Industrial Workers - 100 thousand people.' The map also depicts a line graph showing the increased export of cotton in the Confederacy, beneath a depiction of two slaves hauling cotton bales on their backs. The bottom margin bears the publishing information of a local printing house in Kalinin (later renamed Tver), and the lower-left corner indicates the posters are designed for Russian eighth graders. Notable tear at the lower edge and smaller edge tears throughout, archivally repaired with tape on the verso. Would greatly benefit from proper backing or matting. While the U.S. decried the Soviet Union's crackdown on freedoms during its battle against communism, this poster was a clear attempt by the Soviets to highlight America's reliance on slavery and the great conflict that resulted.
