Description:

SOVIET ORLAN-D SPACE SUIT
Original Soviet space suit, an "Orlan-D" designed specifically for Extra-Vehicular Activities (EVA) or spacewalks. The suit presented here consists of an aluminum torso with integral backpack, with nylon arms and legs adjustable to fit by ratcheting cables, and with a two-layer fiberglass helmet with dual retractable Plexiglas face masks. The wearer could don the suit relatively quickly by entering through a hatch in the backpack, secured by a large latch. Connections for the life support and communications cables which would have connected the cosmonaut to the spacecraft are present on the left hand side. The outer white cloth cover of the suit is not present, as well as the gloves, yet this allows the function of the inner components to be observed. The designation "Orlan-D" is inscribed on the inside lip of the backpack. The Orlan-D was the first suit in the Orlan series to be rated for space flight, and allowed a user to survive outside of their spacecraft for up to five hours. The suit was first used in space during the 1977 Soyuz 26 mission to the Salyut 6 space station, and remained in use until being replaced by the Orlan-DM in 1985. Only 27 test and training models and 7 flight models of the Orlan-D were made. Shows signs of wear and tear from use, else very good.
