Description:

SOVIET 1960 U-2 INCIDENT POSTER
A great association Soviet era poster glorifying the Air Defense group who famously shot down the American U-2 spy plane piloted by Francis Gary Powers on May 1, 1960, 13 x 17.5, color, circa early 1960s, depicting the aircraft being shot down at the top, and the names and faces of the Soviet soldiers at the bottom along with their commander, Major Michael Voronov. At the center are two columns of text explaining an exaggerated account of the of events. Rolled, with light edge wear, else fine condition. Powers was conducting aerial espionage in the U-2 plane on Soviet military bases when he was shot down by the air defense group, but he was able to parachute to safety and later captured. The American government quickly developed a cover-up, stating that NASA had lost a weather research craft north of Turkey which likely landed in the Soviet Union. Nikita Khrushchev purposefully withheld information about the craft and the fact the pilot survived in order to catch the Eisenhower administration in a political trap, and it worked. The result was worldwide embarrassment for the U.S. government, as the incident occurred two weeks before a scheduled East-West summit in Paris to improve relations. When the true mission of the U-2 spy plane was released, the summit was cancelled.
