Description:

Fascinating content A.L.S. in pencil, 4to. 4pp., Ausable, MI, Feb. 6, 1866, written by V.A. White to a Mrs. Jane Trail. The writer tells of being wrongfully accused of"bad conduct" in her hometown of Decatur, AL, and working as a prostitute in Nashville in"...one of the best fancy houses... I made money, lots of it, and lived in splendor... Sometimes [$]75 a day..." Getting tired of that life, however, she"...bought a suit of blues had my hair cut short... was sworn in a soldier of the First Michigan...They called me Little Pete..." The remainder of the letter discusses her current life, denies any wrongdoing in her hometown, and discusses her missing the daughter she had left behind. In part:"...I hope she never hear of the misconduct of her mother. I hope they may raise her up in the way she ought to go...Am now unworthy of claiming her as mine..." According to the Abraham Lincoln Bookshop, Ms. White does not show up on any official roster, yet her enlistment was"doubtless irregular and conceivably even a prank by fellow soldiers." Overall moderate wear with light stains, else very good and clearly readable.
