Description:

SOUTH PACIFIC ISLANDERS JOIN TO FIGHT THE JAPANESE
Fine lot of 13 original Signal Corps photographs, essentially all 5 x 7 in. b/w, most taken in Suva, Fiji in June, 1943. The images depict Fijian, British, and American soldiers marching in uniform (and otherwise, on the part of the Fijians) and being reviewed by officers, a Fijian officer quoted in a caption as declaring: 'All troops [in] this command [are] ready and willing to fight the Japanese at once.' All are in very good condition. Fiji guerillas (known to the United States forces as the South Pacific Scouts) very efficiently eliminated Japanese patrols on several islands at close range. Two further commando groups were dispatched to Guadalcanal in 1943, augmented with volunteers from Tonga and the Solomon Islands. A war correspondent who had observed a training course in Fiji was so impressed with the ability of the Fijian volunteers to operate in the jungle that he stated that ‘When the Fiji Commandos raid at night, death wears velvet gloves.'
