SOUTH CAROLINA LEGAL COMPLAINT SEEKS THE RETURN OF TWENTY-FIVE "NEGROES"
Manuscript document, 5pp. folio, South Carolina, July 9, 1796, a complaint filed by James and Catharine Stone against William Page and Joseph Dopson, Jr., executors of the estate of Joseph Dopson, Sr. Addressed to John Matthews and Hugh Rutledge, justices of the South Carolina Court of Equity, and drafted by a Mr. Marshall, attorney for the Stones, the complaint alleges that Catharine Stone's sister, Sarah Mary Nichols, wrongfully received the whole of the estate of their grandfather, Thomas Nichols, due to machinations between the seniors Nichols and Dopson. Included in the estate are twenty five slaves, each of whom is named. The Stones seek to reclaim what they claim is their fair share of Nichol's estate from the executors of Dopsons estate, plus additional damages. The document shows folds, with light foxing and chipping to the edges. Also present is a manuscript document, 3pp. 4to., a fair copy of Thomas Nichols' will, executed by the Attorney Marshall and referred to as Exhibit "A" in the complaint. This document shows folds and rodent damage to the right edge, else very good.
