Description:

SONS OF UNION VETERANS SWORD
American rapier-style ceremonial sword, 28" blade, 34" overall, with a brass hilt with a D-shaped handguard and a single "clamshell" crossguard. The "clamshell" bears the entwined initials "S V", for Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, the current official successor to the Grand Army of the Republic. Adjacent to these initials are a fouled anchor, crossed cannons, crossed rifles and a cartridge pouch, emblematic of the branches of the Union military. The obverse side of the blade is acid-etched with the inscription "[M] J. Reed Maker Phila. Pa." Oddly, the reverse ricasso is stamped "Schnitzler A&A Solingen". The blade is further acid-etched "S.V" within a floral motif atop crossed flags and cannons. The grip is of fine brown leather wrapped with braided brass wire, and the pommel is decorated with a federal eagle and winged shield insignia. The sword is housed in a bright steel scabbard with two brass bands, and a brass drag featuring a star and a bundle of arrows at the tip. The blade shows minor surface oxidation at the ricasso, with a repaired crack to the handguard, else very good.
