SOLDIER'S LETTER FROM GETTYSBURG
Good content A.L.S. of an unidentified soldier in the Pennsylvania militia to his wife, 4pp. 8vo., June 19, 1863, grammar and spelling not corrected. In part: ‘…i seat myself this evening to write a few lines to you…i was glad to hear that you were still enjoying good health…i will tell you that the excitement is not as great as it was. The report is that the rebs have left chambersburg and went back to Hagerstown…there is so many reports that we don't know what to believe. There was a great many people above us flitted there horses i believe they did not destroy private property they took all the horses they could get and they burned the big railroad bridge at Chambersburg and tore up the railroad i must tell you who they blame for burning everything it is ely smith the man that bought our grain for the government they say he is one of the worst kind of men when it was burned he swore that last night the one end of town was burned and till tomorrow night other end would be burned…i think he ought to be punished severely for just to think there was some where in 80 families turned out of house…our boys have not left yet they had to go to gettysburg to day but I don't know when they will have to go…father has gotten over his troubles…them women here was never troubled about the war begins to feel it sorely now they were lady that said she didn't care if all the men went if hers did not go, but her man is going and she feels now as she need done before…and her mother in law is wonderfully troubled now…i feel very much for father for he is old…i hope his neighbors will help him along…'. With cover in another hand that reads, in full: 'Mr. Samuel D. Reck Washington D.C. 165 Regiment Pa Ma In Care of Captain [illeg] Company F'. Toning and folds as expected, still very legible.
