SOLDBUCH, WEHRPASS AND PHOTO ALBUM OF A TOBRUK AND EL ALAMEIN VETERAN
Important grouping of documents and photographs releavent to an Afrika Korps radio operator and veteran of Tobruk and El Alamein. Included is the wehrpass and soldbuch of "Funker" Urban Scherle, born June 5, 1921 in Balingen. Scherle served in the R.A.D. until April, 1941, then joined the Signal Corps (2. Nachr. Ers. Abt. 25), but was transfered throughout his service. On Mar. 30, 1942 he shipped out to North Africa to serve in the defense of Cyrenaica, was engaged at Ain el Gazala and Tobruk (where he was hospitalized), then fought with the Afrika Korp to El Alamein. At the end of July, 1942, following El Alamein, Scherle left North Africa and returned to Germany. In August, 1943 until the end of the war, Scherle served in Yugoslavia in Kampfgruppe Fischer. Also present is the Scherle''s photograph album, 11" x 7 1/2" overall, containing about 158 original photos, most 2 1/2" x 3 1/2", showing Scherle''s service in the R.A.D. and the army. Various scenes include his taking the oath of loyalty, service with the R.A.D. in various construction operations including apparently fortifications, training in tropical gear and transport, probably in Greece or North Africa, a few photos of vehicles and some graves in the desert, and military and tourist views of Greece and Yugoslavia. Also present is his 1947 U.S. release and discharge, a pocket military map of North Africa, as well as a 4 1/2" x 1 3/4" wool slip-on shoulder strap woith yellow piping. Overall very good condition.
