Description:

1341. SAMUEL SMITH (1752-1839) Revolutionary war soldier, a Valley Forge veteran who also fought at Long Island and commanded Fort Mifflin when besieged. In the War of 1812 Smith defended Baltimore from British attack. A.D.S. "S.S." with his signature on integral address leaf, 2pp. 4to., [n.p., ca. 1819] to his son, an interesting list of the budget of the U.S. Army for 1809 vs. 1818, with amounts listed for "Indian treaties...Fortifications... Survey Western waters... Boundary lines with Indians..." and so on, apparently undertaken to support his claim for a higher pension. Address leaf bear a clean tear clear of signature, else very good. $150-200
