SIR JAMES BROOKE
(1803-1868) British officer in the Army of the East India Company, whose illustrious career earned him the title of first white Rajah of Sarawak, part of the island of Borneo. Rare A.L.S. "Brooke", 1p. 8vo., Chester, Sept. 28, 1858, to Richard Harker, in part: "...I have read with attention the report...in the 'Daily Post' of the speech I made yesterday in the Town Hall of Liverpool. The report is generally correct...". Brooke claimed the titled of "Highness" which was recognized by the British government, a unique distinction for a subject of the Crown, thus enabling him to create a hereditary dynasty. Having no children of his own, he was succeeded as ruler and Rajah by his nephew Charles. Very good condition.
