Description:

SIOUX PIPESTONE PIPE RECOVERED AT WOUNDED KNEE
An extraordinary American Indian relic, a pipestone pipe recovered from a creek or other body of water at Wounded Knee Creek, site of the Dec. 29, 1890 massacre of nearly three hundred Lakota Sioux killed by soldiers of the U.S. Army on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. The pipe and its wooden stem measure 21.5 in. long overall, with the bowl measuring 4.75 in. tall and showing signs of obvious use. The wooden stem measures 14 in. long and is in parts which join at the decorative brass sleeve mid-length. A very old, deteriorated paper label is affixed to the horizontal part of the bowl, and much of the original black ink provenance on it still remains legible: '...pipe / on cle[?] / water at battle / wounded knee...' The balance of the writing on the label is illegible. These pipes often had an extension jutting forth from the bottom of the bowl - in this case, that piece has been broken off and is lost. As the scene of the battle was very near Wounded Knee Creek, one may safely assume that this treasured pipe was lost by a Sioux Indian as he attempted to flee the massacre, or was lost in the creek by one of the Army soldiers who had taken this pipe as a souvenir.
