CHARLES E. FLANDREAU Born in New York, prominent pioneer citizen of Minnesota, Minnesota Supreme Court jurist, and Franklin Pierce's agent to the Sioux Indians of the Mississippi. Flandreau led a valiant mission In Iowa to rescue four white women captured by renegade Sioux Indians. Rare A.L.S., 1p., 4to, St. Paul, Jan. 25, 1871 to Gen. H.G. Thomas discussing the purchase of a stallion, and whether or not the horse and its owner are a safe investment. Boldly signed "Chas. E. Flandrau" at bottom. Thomas would gain fame a year later for excavating the earthen mounds peculiar to the Dakotas. Minor folds, else fine.
