Description:

SINKING OF THE USS HORNET
A good content A.L.S., 2pp. legal folio, Salem, December 25, 1830, written by Benjamin Cox to an unknown individual discussing the disappearance of his brother and the sinking of the USS HORNET. In part: '...Your inquiries would that I could give a different answer from that which I am now obligated to: He was on board of the Hornet when he was driven out of the harbor by Americans on the 9th of September 1829. Not the slightest doubt...that they floundered near the coast on the next day as the storm that raged with its greatest violence with our lamented friends all on board must have perished. That she sunk at sea is probable had they been driven ashore some part of the wreck would undoubtedly been discovered...My family all of whom are in good health unite with me in sending their sincere respects to you and your family...' Toned with scattered tears along the creases, chipping to the left margin. The USS HORNET was a sloop of war built in 1805 that carried eighteen 32-pound carronades and two 12 pound long guns. It saw action in the War of 1812 and was the first ship in the war to capture a British privateer. It was then assigned to patrol the West Indies until it was lost in 1829 off the coast of Tampico, as described here.
