Description:

SINKING OF THE TITANIC A fine account of the sinking of the Titanic as reported in the St Louis Post-Dispatch, 28pp. folio, Apr. 19, 1912, complete. This issue was printed the day after the Carpathia arrived in New York (the evening of April 18th), and contains one of the first accurate accounts of the sinking, as no detailed account had been wired from the rescue vessel. Additionally, a Post-Dispatch reporter was lucky enough to be aboard the Carpathia when she sailed from Europe. The paper's bold headline reads: "TITANIC AT RACING SPEED WHEN SHE STRUCK; BOILERS EXPLODED" "SHIP TORN IN TWO; LIFEBOATS FOR LESS THAN ONE-THIRD ON BOARD". Also: "'SOMETHING RIGHT AHEAD' LOOKOUT SIGNALED - THEN THE COLLISION...MANY THOUGHT FIRST ALARM A JEST; SLOW TO PUT ON LIFE PRESERVERS". The second page bears the headline: "ORCHESTRA PLAYED 'NEARER MY GOD, TO THEE' AS SHIP MADE FINAL PLUNGE" and on the next page: "ISMAY TELLS INVESTIGATORS HOW HE ESCAPES FROM THE SINKING SHIP". The stories bear a wealth of information, including a full account of the disaster, casualties, the scene as Carpathia arrived, dozens of individual accounts, wireless operator Bride's account of shooting a man attempting to steal Phillip's life preserver, an interview with the captain of the Carpathia, and much more. White Star Line managing director J. Bruce Ismay is selected for severe treatment. One story describes how he was upon the first boat to leave the vessel, and a front page story, bearing a portrait of Ismay, describes his testimony before a Senate subcommittee. A black bordered box within that story reads: "ISMAY DENOUNCED IN SENATE" and blames Ismay for ordering Capt. Smith to proceed at full speed. Disbound, only slight marginal toning and in better condition than the great majority of Titanic papers we've handled. A great piece of journalistic history!
