Description:

SING SING PRISON FARM MAP, 1850
An 1850 map of the notorious New York prison Sing Sing, 22.75 x 16.25 in., as surveyed by L.B. Lane. At this point in time, the prison still maintained a farm above the prison complex as well as facilities far raising poultry and manufacturing consumer goods. The lower portion of the map depicts the walled-in portion of the prison facility, with the Hudson Line railroad crossing through the prison. The lower portion of the walled-in prison contains the men's cells, shops, mess hall, etc., the women's prison lies just above the tracks. Also shown is a garden within the walls and 50 acres of land in the north, a hospital, guards' quarters, stable, reservoir, etc. Some larger toned spots throughout, folds, still quite acceptable. At the time of publication, the prison was beginning to reform with the halting of the ‘Auburn System' imposed by the first warden Elam Lynds, which necessitated complete silence. The New York Prison Association was formed to create better living space for prisoners around the state, along with other reforms such as improved education and increased social interactions.
