102. ALEXANDER SIMPLOT (1837-1914) American artist best known for his renderings of military scenes undertaken in the field, done in the most part for Harper's Weekly. Original signed pencil and ink drawing "Alex. Simplot", 15" x 5 3/4", [n.d., though almost undoubtedly war-date], an image of five cannons on a rampart with one additional cannon on a raft and five soldiers standing in the foreground and background. Simplot titles the piece at bottom: "HOISTING CANNON FROM THE OHIO RIVER INTO FORT DEFIANCE-AT CAIRO" and adds at bottom: "Building Fort Defiance-Cairo Ill. (Section 2)".
