Description:

SIGNED NAZI FLAG FROM THE FIRST CONTACT AT TORGAU
A most historic signed flag relic, the roundel (white circular field and swastika) taken taken from a large garrison NSDAP garrison flag believed to have been captured at Torgau, Germany on the Elbe River on April 25, 1945 - the day Soviet and American troops first met. This contact between the Soviets, advancing from the east, and the Americans, advancing from the west, meant that the two powers had effectively cut Germany in two. The approx. 40 in. dia. cotton roundel with sewn-on swastika has been period-signed by about 48 officers, non-coms and soldiers of the 661st Tank Destroyer Battalion, VII Corps, 1st Army. One officer exuberantly notes: '1st in Torgau, Germany 661 T. D. Bn. 69th I.D. 1st Lt. James J. Clavell April 1945 VICTORY IN EUROPE'. A tag which accompanies the flag mentions that the roundel was once accompanied by two Red Army enameled badges which were traded between the soldiers (no longer present). Some of the signatures have faded slightly, some inconsequential holes to the fabric, else overall very good. The 661st Tank Destroyer Battalion is recognized to have been the first American unit to link-up with Russian forces at Torgau!
