Description:

SIGNED HISTORY OF THE 442ND REGIMENTAL COMBAT TEAM
An extraordinary piece, a copy of the unit history of the 442nd Combat Team signed by two of its most illustrious members, Hawaii senators DANIEL K. INOUYE (1924-2012) and SPARK MATSUNAGA (1916-1990). The history, compiled by members of the 442nd, is a 42pp. 8vo. volume apparently originally published at the end of the war, here reprinted in 1979. Inouye and Matsunaga have both signed and dated the title page, adding their titles as 'U.S. Senator'. Fine condition. Daniel K. Inouye was promoted to sergeant within the first three months of fighting in the Italian countryside north of Rome. In France, he received a battlefield commission to second lieutenant for his actions there, becoming the youngest officer in his regiment. During a battle there, a shot struck him in the chest directly above his heart, but the bullet was stopped by the two silver dollars he happened to have stacked in his shirt pocket. On April 21, 1945, Inouye was grievously wounded while leading an assault on the heavily defended Colle Musatello ridge near San Terenzo, Italy. He eventually received the Medal of Honor on June 21, 2000, from President Bill Clinton, along with 19 other Japanese American servicemen in the 442nd. Spark Matsunaga was twice wounded in battle in Italy and was released from the Army as a Captain.
