Description:

SIGMUND FREUD
(1856 - 1939) Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, he theorized that repressed and forgotten impressions underlie all abnormal mental states, developed a theory of the relevance of dreams, and conceived the idea of the id, ego and superego. Superb content A.L.S. 'Freud' penned on the verso of a 4 x2 business card belonging to the recipient, his assistant, Dr. Paul Federn (1871-1950), January 2, 1909. In full: 'Mr. Riesz, aged 28, psychically and sexually impotent. Had with great difficulty with an experience of coitus and agreed for a psychoanalysis with Dr. Steiner. Thank you for the time given to the patient...' In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Freud's hand. Federn became one of Freud's earliest followers after reading his 'Interpretation of Dreams'; he later served as Freud's surrogate at conferences once the pioneering psychoanalyst was stricken with cancer in the 1920s. An extremely desirable letter, given its content directly related to Freud's psychosexual work.
