Description:

Important pair of photograph albums containing images taken by and of German soldiers and sailors at the German port of Tsingtao during the Japanese siege of the city during World War I. The first album contains fifty two 4 x 6 in. images of largely German soldiers. Four photos show the men parading, ten show men at camp in the field, 17 show the men in combat positions with machine guns and long arms, six show warships, one badly damaged (probably HMS TRIUMPH), one sunk, with the balance of the album showing scenes in the city and countryside. The second album contains forty-seven 4 x 6 in. images, almost exclusively group images of the sailors, always in uniform, in a variety of settings both rural and urban. They all wear cap tallies identifying them as members of the "MATROSEN ARTILLERIE KIAUTSCHOU" which was active during the siege. In both books, the photos are mounted on fold-open pages. The naval book is broken at the spine with the photos now in three sections and covers loose. Both albums bears decorated lacquered wood covers, some chipping thereto. The Siege of Tsingtao (Oct. 31 - Nov. 7, 1914) was an attack on the German port of Tsingtao (now Qingdao) during World War I by Japan and the United Kingdom. It was the first encounter between Japanese and German forces, and the only major land battle in the Asian and Pacific theater during World War I. Waves of Japanese attackers overwhelmed the German defenders, who asked for and received terms on November 7, 1914, surrendering the city a week later.
