SHOLTO DOUGLAS (1893 - 1969) Marshall of the R.A.F. After serving as a squadron commander during the First World War, he became Director of Staff Duties and then Assistant Chief of the Air Staff at the Air Ministry. During World War II, he served as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Fighter Command and Air Officer Commanding in Chief of RAF Middle East Command where he advocated Operation Accolade, a planned British amphibious assault on Rhodes and the Dodecanese Islands in the Aegean Sea. Very rare World War I-date D.S. as Commanding Major of the 84 Squadron, 1p. large 4to., [France], Feb. 18, 1918, a 'Combats in the Air' report in which 2nd Lt. Charles L. Stubbs documents an attack on an enemy two-seater. British ace CHARLES L. STUBBS was a member of the RFC and would accumulate a record of one captured, 2 destroyed, three and one shared out of control. In part: '...we observed a formation of two E.A. two-seaters and two V-strutters...The E.A. dived in different directions...I saw a two-seater directly below me...I followed him and got in several good bursts from close range. I saw my tracer going into him. I followed him down firing...The leader broke off the combat as there were six E.A. scouts above us. When last seen the E.A. was...still going down vertically...' Signed by Douglas at bottom as Major and Commander of 84 Squadron. Several file holes, lightly toned, else very good.
