Description:

780. WILLIAM T. SHERMAN (1820-1891) Union major general declared by the press to be "insane", he led his army in their March to the Sea, taking Atlanta, Savannah and Columbia along the way. Fine content war-date A.L.S. "Sherman" 1p. on a long 12mo. sheet, [n.p., n.d., but docketed at top right "Memphis 1862"], to David D. Porter during the Arkansas expedition, in full: "Admiral Porter As soon as General Steele reports in the Continental, will fire a Gun and run down the Gaines's Landing at the rate of ten miles the hour Sherman". Written likely near or during the battle of Goodrich's Landing at the end of June, 1863, when Confederate forces undertook an expedition from Gaines's Landing in Arkansas to Lake Providence. Gen. Frederick Steele led the Arkansas expedition and was ordered to clear that state of Confederates who might threaten operations east of the Mississippi, and is remembered for his successful campaign to retake much of secessionist Arkansas. Penned on a long narrow slip, possibly taken from a larger document. Light tear traverses the salutation and first couple of words of first sentence, otherwise very good condition. $300-400
