Description:

A fine, good content, war date unsigned manuscript. 1p. 8vo., Virginia, June 13, 1862, the text of a telegram sent by Congressman Daniel Gooch (1820-1891) to Union major general Nathaniel P. Banks (1816-1894) regarding a message from the Secretary of War. In full: '...I have seen Secretary Stanton. He says it's impossible to transfer Hartsuff's brigade at present. He has telegraphed you to come here. I hope that I will see you here...' George Hartsuff (1830-1874) was a Union major general who served in the Army of the Potomac. Fine condition. This telegram was written during General Stonewall Jackson's Shenandoah Valley campaign in which his smaller force won several minor victories due to their quick movements and audacious attacks. Following the Union defeat at the First Battle of Winchester on May 25, 1862, Gen. Nathaniel Banks was retreating his army back across the Potomac into Maryland to prevent an attack on Washington. He was constantly requesting reinforcements from his superiors which he never received, and the War Department instead reorganized much of his force. This is cited as a main reason for the Union defeats for which Banks was blamed.
