Description:

SHEKEL OF TYRE
An interesting relic, a silver Shekel of Tyre with a "KP" Jerusalem mint mark, dating from the time of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, 126 B.C. to 70 C.E.. This famous coin is the type mentioned as the "thirty pieces of silver" paid to Judas as documented in Matthew 26: 14-15. It measures 1" in diameter, with an obverse design of the Laureate Head of Melquarth facing right, wearing a lion skin knotted around his neck, while the reverse side features an eagle with an inscription that reads: "Of Tyre the holy and inviolable". This silver Shekel of Tyre and the silver half Shekel of Tyre were the only currencies accepted at the Temple of Jerusalem. They are considered by most historians to be the coins in which the bible refers to in the quote from Matthew above. Very good condition.
