Description:

SHARPS CAVALRY CARBINE
A fine Sharps Model 1863 carbine, 21 1/2" barrel, 39" overall, chambered for .52 caliber ammunition and featuring a Lawrence "Pellet Primer" system. The carbine is loaded by means of a "falling block" system, in which the trigger guard is swung down and forward, causing the breech-block to fall and exposing the breech for loading. After loading, the hammer must be manually cocked, and a primer cap applied either by the Lawrence system or by hand. The low serial number "C, 6859"is stamped on the tang. The left side of the breech is marked "C. Sharps Pat. Sept. 12 1848"; the right side bears the marks "C. Sharps Pat. Oct. 5th 1852" and "R.S. Lawrence Pat. April 12th 1859". The top of the barrel is marked "New Model 1863" and "Sharps Rifle Manufg. Co. Hartford Conn.", while the rear sight is marked with an additional patent to Lawrence. An original cavalry-style sling clasp is attached to the saddle ring at the left side. The carbine bears a smooth brown patina throughout, with all markings clearly visible. The bore retains much of its shine, with crisp rifling and easily discernible lands and grooves, showing no pitting. The lock is strong, and cocks and fires properly. The walnut stock bears its original finish, and shows small dings and handling marks throughout, with a 1 1/2" crack before the front barrel band spring, else very good. The Sharps was the most common and popular carbine of the Civil War, and saw use with Union and Confederate cavalry, sharpshooters, and other irregular troops.
