Description:

1160. WILLIAM H. SEWARD (1801-1872) American politician and Lincoln's Secretary of State, responsible for preventing official European recognition of the Confederacy. A.L.S. as Senator, 2pp. 8vo., Washington, "Monday Morning" [1849] to Ohio Sen. Thomas Ewing informing him that "...I am authorized to offer John C. Clark's man for Governor of Minnesota. He is able, wise , efficient and worthy... It is a small concession to New York... I saw the President about it last ev[eni]ng. He thought well of Clark, but explained a desire to gratify Illinois with he appointment... But permit me to say... that this would be a waste - Illinois is a hopelessly Loco Foco state that cannot be won, New York is a strong Whig state that must be retained..." A fine testament to Seward's easy access to the President, even as a freshman Senator. Small file holes at left margin, very light soiling, otherwise fine. $150-250
