Description:

Interesting pair of letters concerning the long-disputed Florida-Georgia border in the area of the long and winding St. Mary's River. Included is a letter from JOHN EATON (1790-1856) Secretary of War under Andrew Jackson, forced to resign over the "Petticoat" scandal. Good content A.L. (unsigned), 2pp. 4to., Tallahassee, Mar. 26, 1846 Tallahassee, Mar. 26, 1846, most likely to JOHN BRANCH (1782–1863), U.S. Senator, Secretary of the Navy, Governor of North Carolina, and last territorial governor of Florida. Rather difficult to read, but in part: "...it is our ardent desire to settle the...boundary between Georgia & Florida...on a just and amicable basis...after the most mature deliberation& consultation, we cannot consent to change the terms[?]...on the line to be run...between Georgia & Florida from the junction of the [?] and Chattahoochie to the point agreed on by the commissioners of the U. States & Spain in conformity with the Treaty of 1795..." From the correspondence of West Florida Gov. JOHN BRANCH, who served with Eaton in Andrew Jackson's cabinet. Eaton was a topographical engineer and here likely was lending his talents to his old comrade. Accompanied by a related L.S. by one W. D. Moseley, 1p. 4to., Tallahassee, Apr. 3, 1846, also to Branch and commissioners seeking to settle the Florida-Georgia boundary. Moseley, apparently a cost consultant, discusses the cost of "running of the boundary lines between Georgia and this State", and states that Florida could afford to pay surveyors a per diem of $6.00. Two pieces.
