Description:

SETH WILLIAMS
Good content war-date L.S., 2pp. 4to., Washington, Dec. 9, 1861 to the wife of First Lt. John W. Dempsey of the 82nd N.Y. Infantry, wounded and captured at First Manassas on July 21, 1861. Williams advises the worried woman that: "...no formal or general arrangement has yet been effected for the release or exchange of prisoners...now imprisoned at Richmond and Charleston...the Government cannot...make special mention of any officer or citizen whose release is particularly desirable...". A few archival repairs to fold splits, else very good. Dempsey would not be paroled until two years later.
