Description:

Seth Williams 1822-1866 Union brigadier general active at Gettysburg Petersburg and Atlanta and Adjutant General of the Army of the Potomac. Important partly printed D.S., 1p. 4to., Camp near Harrison's Landing , July 21, 1862, a twenty day leave of absence granted to Brigadier General Darius N. Couch, signed by William as Assistant Adjutant General. On the verso in Couch's hand is written: Reply of Gen. McClellan to my letter of resignation . Couch had resigned following the Peninsula Campaign supposedly due to reasons of health , but actually Couch was holding out for promotion. McClellan refused the request, and Couch soon won promotion to major general. Small fold tear archivally repaired on verso.
