Description:

SEMYON TIMOSHENKO
(1895-1970) Marshal of the Soviet Union. After serving as Stalin's first chief commander, he served as overall commander at Stalingrad, Leningrad, Caucasus, and on the Baltic fronts. Fine-content typed D.S., 1p. legal folio, [n.p., Jan. 1, 1967], in part: ‘…Vladimir Lenin said…to protect the power of the workers and peasants from robbers, i.e. landholders and capitalists, we need a powerful Red Army. We have proven, not in words, but in deeds, that we can create it, and that we have learned to manage it and the capitalists…The Soviet people were building a new life, but they never forgot that there were still forces in the world that could hinder the development in our society…[One song proclaimed] We are peaceful people, but our armored train is ready in the siding. Another…We don't want an inch of [your] land, but we won't give up an inch of ours. I love songs: in them…people have expressed their thoughts, inspirations, everything that excites the human soul…'. Signed six months before The Six Day War with Israel, which no doubt was looming on the horizon and inspired the content of Timoshenko's document.
