Description:

Rare poster, 17" x 21 1/2", U.S. Government Printing Office, 1946, issued in the name of Alien Property Custodian JAMES E. MARKHAM. The poster is headed: "GERMAN AND JAPANESE Property", reading in part: "Any person who has custody, control, possession or use of any property of any type located in the United States, belonging to citizens of Germany or Japan not residing in the United States, is required by law to report such property to the United States Alien Property Custodian at once..." Matted with a signed FDC cover by Markham and photo loosely slipped in, the entirety set into an oak frame. Fine. The Office of Alien Property Custodian was a government office during both world wars, created under the Trading with the Enemy Act 1917. In 1942, Roosevelt established the Office of the Alien Property Custodian as an independent agency under his direct authority. During the war, the APC amassed a vast portfolio of enemy property including real estate, business enterprises, ships and intellectual property in the form of trademarks, copyrights, patents and pending patent applications. Following Nikola Tesla's death at the New Yorker Hotel in 1943, the Custodian seized much of Tesla's work from his hotel room even though Tesla was an American citizen.
