American patriot, unanimously elected first Secretary of the Continental Congress in 1774 and held the post until 1789, chosen to notify Washington of his election to the Presidency. Highly important manuscript D.S. "Chas Thomson Secy." 1p. legal folio., [Philadelphia], Mar. 4, 1784 recording the election of the commissioners charged with negotiating Indian treaties including two who would negotiate the Second Treaty of Fort Stanwix with the Iroquois in October of that year. The document reads in full: "By The United States in Congress Assembled Mar 4, 1784 Congress proceeded tot he election of five Commissioners to negotiate with the Indians and the ballots being taken -- Mr. George Rogers Clarke Mr. Oliver Wolcott Mr. Nathaniel Greene, Mr. Richard Butler & Mr. Stephen Higgenson were elected -- Chas. Thomson Secy". Two members of the commission, Oliver Wolcott and Richard Butler, signed the treaty on October 22, 1784 in which the Iroquois agreed to cede all lands west of the Niagara River. The treaty was flawed however in that the Ohio tribes rejected the terms and hostilities continued for another twenty-five years. Repaired fold separation affects Thompson's signature, small loss at left margin not affecting text, otherwise very good and quite clean. A historic piece!.
