Description:

SCRAPBOOK WITH DOG TAG OF A 29TH INFANTRY OMAHA BEACH ARTILLERY OFFICER
Lot of three scrapbooks kept by the family of Col. Stratford E. McKenrick who landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1945. The books contain mostly newspaper clippings documenting highlights of the war and events concerning those known to the family. However, there are number of more interesting items, including one of McKenrick's dog tags; a 29th Infantry Div. shoulder patch; a "D-Day to St. Lo 29 LET'S GO" certificate issued by the 29th Infantry certifying that McKenrick served with the regiment on D-Day and signed (faded) by Gen. CHARLES H. GERHARDT; McKenrick's Bronze Star from his chest ribbon, along with a section of the original medal's chest ribbon (awarded for D-Day); program from the commissioning of the carrier USS FRANKLIN, later heavily damaged with great loss of life; five franc "invasion" bank note; German and French propaganda leaflets; "Liberator" hand bill published in France; German occupation banknote; underground newspaper "Le Libre Belgique" welcoming liberators; an Aachen District paper seal attached beside a Veuve Cliquot label, obviously obtained as the officer crossed into Germany, some casual photographs, and a few other interesting items. Col. Stratford E. McKenrick (1913-1992) was a senior member of the headquarters staff of the 110th Field Artillery, 29th Infantry Division. On June 6, 1944 McKenrick and elements of that division landed on one of the "Fox" landing zones on Omaha Beach to establish observation points and offload ammunition. The ammunition was soon struck by enemy fire, forcing McKenrick's contingent to temporarily withdraw. With copies of McKenrick's discharge papers and a diary entry. Consigned by a direct descendant.
