SCOUT BEN CLARK IS INTRODUCED TO ULYSSES S. GRANT
BEN CLARK (1842-1914) Indian scout who served in the "Mormon War" and Kansas 6th Cav. in the Civil War, scout and guide for Alfred Sully, Phil Sheridan, and was chief of scouts for Custer in the Washita expedition, later served as scout for Nelson Miles and Crook in the Dull Knife campaign. In all, Clark undoubtedly was the most valued scout in the West. Fine content L.S., 1p. 4to., Camp Supply, I.T., Mar. 1, 1875 in which Post Asst. Quartermaster C. A. Reynolds pens a letter of introduction for Clark to President Ulysses S. Grant. In part: "...I take pleasure in introducing Mr. Ben Clark, who has been employed by the Government for the past six years...as scout and interpreter, and acted as guide to Gen. Nelson A. Miles command in the recent expedition against the Indians. He has been connected with the Government since the fifties, & this is his first visit east. His wife is a Cheyenne, and any information he may convey in relation to Indian matters, can be relied upon...". File holes in left margin, else near fine.
