Description:

SCOTTISH SGIAN DUBH BOOT DAGGER
Antique Scottish sgian dubh, a small, single-edged knife worn as part of traditional Scottish Highland dress. The knife, 7 1/2" long overall, bears an intricately carved ebony-colored wood handle with sterling silver trim above and below the grip, topped with a round pommel nut. The blade, 4" long, bears a very slight arch, intentionally so. It is unmarked. The black leather-covered scabbard bears silver trim at top and bottom with four hallmarks, including a thistle, used to denote sterling, a castle, used to denote an Edinburgh maker, and a "W". The steel blade bears slight oxidation, otherwise in excellent condition. Originally used for eating and preparing fruit, meat, and cutting bread and cheese – as well as serving for other more general day to day uses such as cutting material and protection, this type of knife is now worn as part of traditional Scottish dress tucked into the top of the kilt hose.
